Most people probably don’t give a lot of thought to breathing, after all, it’s something we don’t even have to think about – it just happens. The problem is that most of us breathe just enough to “get by,” and by changing our breathing habits we can improve our health, and probably feel better every day as well. It takes time and patience, but learning how to breathe the right way is certainly worth it. There are numerous resources on the internet and in books that can help you learn how to breathe the “right” way.
We all do it. Unless you are a language professor who puts a lot of effort into pronouncing every word correctly, there are certainly some words you don’t pronounce properly. There’s also a lot of outright misuse of words that seems to be going around these days. How many times have you used, or heard someone else use the word “literally” incorrectly? People don’t seem to realize that literally means something actually happened. That’s just one example of the many ways people can misuse a common word.
This mistake could actually be causing people some harm over the long term. Bad posture practiced over a long period can lead to back problems. Sitting or standing the way we normally do is another thing so many of us just don’t think about, and many of us have adopted bad habits like slouching when we sit or not standing up straight. Much like breathing, it will take a bit of work to change your posture, and there is no shortage of resources on the internet that can help get you started with the right advice and tips.
#4 WASHING UP
We’ve all heard from doctors and other health professionals about how important it is to wash our hands, especially during cold and flu season. Sometimes it can be a bit of a hassle to do it, but putting a bit of soap on your hands and running them under the water for a minute or two is probably better than getting the flu. The problem is that most of us just don’t do it right. It only takes a few more minutes to make sure you soap up sufficiently and spend at least 30 seconds working the soap into areas like your wrists, the back of your hands, under your fingernails, and between your fingers. Rinse thoroughly and then dry with something clean. It kind of defeats the whole purpose of washing your hands if you dry them with a dirty old towel that’s been hanging by the sink for three weeks.
#5 USING YOUR DISHWASHER
There are probably a million different ideas about how to load a dishwasher, and everyone probably thinks they have worked out the absolute best way to do it. It’s actually quite simple and does not take a lot of research to discover the best way to load a dishwasher. The best advice is likely to come from the manufacturer. Just crack that little manual that came with your dishwasher and follow the instructions. Changes are pretty good that the manufacturer put a lot of research into designing and building it, so they are likely to know how best to operate it.
#6 USING A KNIFE
Yes, there’s even a right way and a wrong way to cut something. If you’ve had training as a chef you probably know all about this already, but for most of us, we just pick up a knife and start cutting away without giving it too much thought. It might not seem all that important, but learning how to hold a knife properly could save you from a nasty cut. There are numerous tutorials and videos on the internet that will provide you with expert instruction on how to use a knife properly.
Here’s an exception to what was said at the opening about these mistakes not hurting anyone. As we all know, driving is a serious responsibility, and it’s way to easy for carelessness to injure or even kill someone. So many of us tend to drive on “autopilot” because it is something we do so often. Just putting effort into paying attention more while behind the wheel can make a difference that could save a life – maybe even your own.
#8 BRUSHING AND FLOSSING
How many times have you heard about how important it is to brush and floss your teeth every day? Probably too many times, right? It’s one thing to brush and floss and another thing to do it right. This is another area where we tend to fall victim to habit, and since it is something so many of us do so often, we just go through the motions without much regard for how well we are doing it. Your dentist or hygienist will be quite happy to provide you with all the instructions you need on brushing and flossing the right way, and you might spend less time in the dentist’s chair as a result. That’s always a good thing!
